Mark W. Exner began his long career in the cleaning industry at the age of nineteen back in 1974, taking his employment in a hospital housekeeping department for $2.75 per hour.

Mark continued to clean and eventually started a cleaning company. After many years, he decided to take a course on cleaning carpets and quickly learned the value of a formal, generic education in cleaning. He soon realized if the information could help him that much, he would like to instruct and inspire others as well.

Today Mark instructs ISSA’s Cleaning Management Institute’s (CMI) Train the Trainer and Certified Custodial Cleaning Technician courses. He also instructs IICRC cleaning courses in Commercial Carpet (CMT), Residential Carpet (CCT), and Upholstery Fabric (UFT).

Mark also offers continuing education credit classes (CEC’s) under his brand name “The Cleaning Basics 101 Series,” as well as online courses and seminars. Mark’s warm and simple approach has inspired many, and his deep respect for his students.

• 1996 - Achieved IICRC Master Cleaner; Approved as an IICRC Instructor; approved to teach IICRC CCT - Carpet Cleaning Technician
• 1997 - Approved to instruct IICRC UFT - Upholstery Fabric Certification & IICRC CCMT- Commercial Carpet Maintenance Technician (One of only five original instructors of this subject!); Restoration Training Services approved as IICRC Certification School
• 2007 - 2010 - Served as Chair for the new upgraded IICRC S100 Carpet Cleaning Standards, Chapter 7 Tools and Equipment. (this is the cleaning standard for all commercial, residential, and area rug cleaning)
• 2015 - 2016 - Served as Chairman of the IICRC Instructors Advisory Committee, a representative body of worldwide IICRC Approved instructors needs varying from policy changes, advise, and other circumstantial needs.
• 2018 to Present - Master Trainer for ISSA, the International Sanitary Supply Association, and their education arm, Cleaning Management Institute. (Mark is one of six Master Trainers in their world-wide education system.)
• 2023 and continuing - Speaker at ISSA North America Convention on Carpet Care. ISSA’s Carpet Care Spokesman and Standards Writer. Rewrote and upgraded the ISSA’s Textbooks- both Basic and Advanced for carpet care modules.
• 2024 - Authored the complete revision of Cleaning Managements’ carpet cleaning sections of their custodial training textbook.
• Patent holder for utilizing a supercharger as a vacuum system to remove soiled cleaning wastewater or flood water from all surfaces under high speed as well as PumpOut Shield.
